Tannehill, Dolphins Route Raiders 38-14

Maybe the Dolphins should be the team to move to London? After today's performance why would you want to see them leave?

Ryan Tannehill was excellent, completing 23-31 passes for 278 yards and 2 TD's.

He was crisp. Accurate. Smart. Everything you've been waiting for out of the third year QB.

Maybe Joe Philbin's silly antics this week worked? Who knows.

It wasn't just Tannehill though.

Brian Hartline was terrific. Mike Wallace was, well, Mike Wallace. Lamar Miller, fumbling issue aside, had a career day, scoring two TD's.

The defense, after the first drive, was nothing short of dominant.

Brent Grimes had an INT. Walt Aikens had an INT. Cortland Finnegan returned a fumble for a touchdown.

When this group gets a lead they're fun to watch, folks.

Sure, there were problems. Mike Wallace, Jarvis Landry, and Lamar Miller all fumbled. That can't happen.

The defense was gashed the first possession.

But, for the most part, it was as close to a flawless afternoon for this team as I've seen in a long, long time.

And going into a much needed bye week, that's a HUGE accomplishment for a team that's faced it's fair share of adversity this season.

More to come.

Dolphins Dominating Raiders 38-7 after third quarter

Maybe we will see Matt Moore today after all.

Following a Lamar Miller fumble in the end zone, Brent Grimes returned a Carr INT all the way to the Oakland 3 yard line. Two plays later Miller would make amends, running untouched into the end zone to make it 31-7 Miami.

On the next Oakland drive, backup QB Matt McGloin would misread the snap, which resulted in a Cortland Finnegan 50 yard return for a touchdown.

McGloin, by the way, is playing because David Carr left the game with a knee injury.

It's a laugher in London.. And perhaps Matt Moore time after all.

To the fourth.

Dolphins Pummeling Raiders 24-7 at Halftime

Ryan Tannehill isn't ready to concede quite yet, apparently.

17-19, 204 yards, 2 TD's. 14 straight completions.

QB controversy? No today.

He's been spectacular. Superb. Flawless.

He's been everything these Dolphins have been waiting for.

It's not just him, though.

Brian Hartline appears to be back to his old self, catching 5 passes for 60 yards in the first half.

Charles Clay has had a couple big catches.

Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas have gashed the defense.

Mike Wallace had a 13 yard TD catch that featured three broken tackles.

The offensive line? No sacks.

The play calling? Creative. Imaginative. Smart.

The defense? One bad possession followed by a dominant next four.

Miami had out gained the Raiders 284-132. It hasn't even been close.

This is the type of game I expected last week. This is the team I expected this season.

24-7.

To the third.

Raiders lead Dolphins 7-3 after first quarter

Another bad start out of the gate for Miami, as Derrick Carr and the Raiders drove the length of the field for an all too easy TD.

However, Miami has responded.

A Caleb Sturgis 41 yard FG made it 7-3.

An Oakland punt has been answered by a long Miami drive that has them in the red zone.

Ryan Tannehill has been sharp. He missed one pass to Hartline but other than he's been on the money.

He needs to get his team in the end zone now.

To the second.

Beautiful evening across the pond, as the Dolphins and Raiders are less than an hour away from kickoff from Wembley Stadium.

The inactives for Miami include:

28- Knowshon Moreno
51- Mike Pouncey
55- Koa Misi

See you then.

Gameday: Five Areas That MUST Improve PLUS Prediction

All right?

Apparently, that's how they say "Hello, how are you?" across the pond, so, in honor of today's London showdown, that's what I'm going with.

Anyway, a good morning to all here in America. The Dolphins and Raiders are roughly five hours away from kicking things off from Wembley Stadium, a game that may look subpar on paper but holds heavy, heavy importance.

The turmoil in Miami this week, as I've written, has been a massively unnecessary distraction to Ryan Tannehill and others within that Dolphins locker room. Joe Philbin even admitted it on Friday. Was it a wake up call? Absolutely. Should it have been handled differently? Absolutely. But that's all water under the (London) bridge, according to Tannehill, and now we get to see what effect, if any, it had on the third year QB.

A good game today and it all goes away. Everything is ham and eggs once again in South Beach.

But a loss? A bad game from Tannehill?

Gulp.

So, how do these Dolphins avoid said loss? Well, along with Tannehill, there are plenty of other areas that need to improve, as I've also written about this week.

What areas?

Glad you asked!

1. Wide Receivers: Other than Mike Wallace, this group, and I'm including Charles Clay, has been severely underwhelming this season. The drops have been back breakers. They need to end, and they need to end today.

Someone other than Wallace, I'm talking to you Brian Hartline and Charles Clay, needs to step up.

This is the highest paid group in the NFL, no more drops, please.

2. The offensive line: Nine sacks. Too many, folks. Yes, Ryan Tannehill has to be better in the pocket, but, as was the story last season, it's not all on him.

Dallas Thomas MUST step up today filling in for Shelly Smith. Branden Albert MUST be the shutdown tackle his reputation perceives him as. Ja'Wuan James MUST bounce back from a bad game.

This group has to gel today.

3. Run defense: Miami's defensive line may very well be the most complete group in the league as far as rushing the passer. But stuffing the run? Not so much.

Knile Davis torched this defense last week, and with Maurice Jones Drew expected to play today, I fear you could see more of the same. The line has to be better, the linebackers HAVE to be better, injuries or not, and the tackling HAS TO BE better.

4. Special Teams: This unit has been, unequivocally, the worst of the three so far this season. CJ Spiller had a kick return for a TD in week two. Fields has a punt blocked in that same game. Jarvis Landry has been home run or bust. Caleb Strugis missed a FG last week. It's just not good enough, not by a long shot.

Darren Rizzi's unit has to improve, it's critical to this team's success.

5. Coaching: Joe Philbin has been ultra conservative this season.

Against Buffalo it was the debacle at the end of the first half, where he chose to run out the clock with three timeouts down by nine. Last week, he chose to kick a long FG on 4th and 1. As I just said, Strugis missed. Kansas City would go on to score.

It doesn't end with Philbin, though. Bill Lazor, as I've written, is in my doghouse right now. Memo to Bill: When something is working, STICK WITH IT. Don't run consecutive pass plays when you have ONE YARD to go for a first down and the running game has been dominant all day long.

Open up the playbook, go with what's working, and take some chances. It'll do wonders, guys.

PREDICTION

I've covered this team, both officially and unofficially, for a long time now. I have NEVER started 0-3 in my picks. I don't know what it is, but I just can't get a handle on this team right now. I do know this, though: We should learn A LOT about them today, good or bad.

I'm going to take the optimist route one more time, and pick them to win. It really shouldn't be this difficult. Miami is the far superior team, from top to bottom.

Unfortunately, I said the same thing last week. Need a win today. Somehow, some way.

Final: Dolphins 23 Raiders 13

Alright, we all know the drill by now. Come back before the game to get your list of inactives and any other pre game news.

THEN, after you do that, make sure to keep checking the live, quarter-by-quarter, blog throughout the game.

Until then...

Best of British! (good luck...apparently)

Week Four in the NFL: Picks and predictions

The third round of a major is referred to as "moving day." After week three, you might as well just start calling me Rory Mcllroy. Now, it's time to build on it.

Last week's record: 12-3

Overall record: 27-18

Packers @ Bears: "Five letters here just for everybody out there in Packer-land: R-E-L-A-X. Relax. We're going to be OK." I know you will be, Aaron. I know.

Pick: Packers 27 Bears 23

Bills @ Texans: What do two average quarterbacks plus two scary defenses equal? A snoozer.

Pick: Texans 17 Bills 16

Titans @ Colts: ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! Guess who visited his friendly neighborhood MRI machine this week? That’s right, good ol’ Jake Locker. Kudos to him, though.. three weeks has to be a PR, right?

Pick: Colts 31 Titans 13

Panthers @ Ravens: Steve Smith may very well have a career game here, but one player can't do it all. I like SuperCam and the Cats to get it done.

Pick: Panthers 23 Ravens 17

Lions @ Jets: How do the Jets manage to lose in such Jets fashion week in and week out? It’s nothing short of impressive at this point. #MV1

Pick: Lions 24 Jets 14

Buccaneers @ Steelers: Offensive Coordinator Jeff Tedford is taking an indefinite leave of absence.. That offense would give me heart problems too.

Pick: Steelers 28 Buccaneers 10

Jaguars @ Chargers: My life would be so much easier if Philip Rivers was Miami’s quarterback. I guess that’s what Madden’s for, though.

Pick: Chargers 35 Jaguars 7

Falcons @ Vikings: Rookie quarterback making his first career start? Rest up, Matt Asiata. Gonna be a looooong day.

Pick: Falcons 30 Vikings 13

Eagles @ 49ers: Guess that whole “Nick Foles is a fluke” thing was kinda silly, wasn’t it? The kid’s good. But an angry 49ers team at home, coming off a loss, is probably better. Probably.

Pick: 49ers 27 Eagles 24

Saints @ Cowboys: Hope Jerry bought a couple new bulbs for the scoreboard. Not exactly a defensive struggle here. Need one. Got one. Upset city, population, Jerry’s world.

Pick: Cowboys 35 Saints 31

Patriots @ Chiefs: You know what’s better than one upset? Two upsets. Come Andy, lemme see that post game dance again!

Pick: Chiefs 24 Patriots 21

All your pre game Dolphins coverage will be up and at em' tomorrow morning, so come back and check it out, as well as my prediction for tomorrow's game (although I'm 0-3, so I don't blame you if you don't).

And, as always, remember to follow the live blog throughout the game.

One. Day.

Dolphins Final Injury Report Includes Big Names

It may be 6:30 here in America, but, in London, it's already game day as the Dolphins and Raiders are nearing their international kickoff.

Unfortunately for Miami, there will be a few key players not participating in this one. Big time players.

Koa Misi will miss his third straight game. Jason Trusnik will, again, start in his place.

Randy Starks has been ruled OUT with a back injury. He didn't even make the trip. Earl Mitchell and Jared Odrick will be fine fill ins. Mitchell has arguably been the most impressive lineman this season against the run.

LB Chris McCain didn't make the trip either. He's been dealing with a death in the family. This is even more of a loss because Jelani Jenkins, who has filled in admirably this season and leads the team in tackles, is listed as questionable with an abdomen issue. Linebacker is a paper thin unit, folks. Keep an eye on this.

And finally, C Mike Pouncey, who did travel with the team, will NOT play tomorrow. It appears he'll be ready to go following the bye week.

Here is the full injury report:

OUT: Randy Starks, Knowshon Moreno

Doubtful: Shelly Smith, Koa Misi, Mike Pouncey

Questionable: Jelani Jenkins, Damian Williams

Probable: Terrence Fede, Jordan Tripp, Jimmy Wilson, Cortland Finnegan, Billy Turner, Jonathan Freeny, Brandon Gibson, Charles Clay

Picks and predictions are on deck, don't wanna miss them.

Latest Controversy Has Philbin, Dolphins Nearing Disaster

Can't we just go back to week one?

Back to the Mike Wallace circus catch in the end zone? Back to the Knowshon Moreno demolition derby? Back to the Cam Wake whack-a-mole?

Can't we just relive that day for just a moment? Bask in the glory a little longer? Relish the smiles, the hugs, the tears, even?

It was only 17 days ago. That's all. Hard to believe, isn't it? After two 19 point losses, and one curveball of a press conference, 17 days seems more like 17 weeks right now in South Florida.

All because of #17. Sort of ironic, isn't it?

And now here we are, less than three weeks removed from that glorious afternoon, trying to sift through the wreckage left behind by Joe Philbin. Trying to understand what angle he's taking, what trick he has up his sleeve, what end game he has in mind.

So far...crickets.

And it's not just us, either.

"Honestly, yes," Ryan Tannehill said today when asked if Philbin's words, or lack thereof, bothered him.

"Does it feel good to deal with all the distractions that have been created? No. But that's life. You face distractions and you face adversity in life. You have to be able to handle it. You have to be able to fight through it and become a better player because of it. So here we are and we're getting ready to play."

It was an unusually candid response from a usually laid back Tannehill, and it was clear the suddenly embattled quarterback was visibly frustrated. But it didn't stop there.

"He told me why and I asked him," Tannehill said. "You got to get that from him. He has his reasons."

To quote one Neil Armstrong, Houston, we have a problem. A big one. And I can only foresee one way of fixing it: Win, and win now.

Because a loss on Sunday would turn this potential storm into a full blown, category five hurricane for Joe Philbin and the Miami Dolphins. One that I don't see anybody surviving.

Anything less than a win on Sunday, headlined by a solid performance out of Ryan Tannehill, is going to send this once promising season into an uncontrollable tailspin.

You thought last December was pressure? Sunday is going to make that seem like a preseason game. Because make no mistake about it, if, and when, Joe Philbin makes the switch to Matt Moore, there is absolutely no going back. And if it doesn't work, if Moore doesn't get you nine wins and a playoff spot, then it'll be the last move Phlbin ever makes as a head coach.

And maybe that's what Joe Philbin wants. Maybe this is his play. If it is, and it sure seems like it is, then he better hope it works, because he's all in now. His hand is dealt.

Unfortunately, and probably unnecessarily, it's him against the world right now.

And it's only week four! Talk about a compelling drama. Talk about an unnecessary turn of events. Talk about reality TV at it's finest.

All because of what Philbin didn't say.

Tomorrow night, Tannehill and the Dolphins are set to leave for London, which begs the question that only 17 short days ago seemed unthinkable: Has Ryan Tannehill started his last game on American soil for the Miami Dolphins?

For once, all eyes will be on Joe Philbin, #17, and the 1-2 Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Unfortunately, it's just for all the wrong reasons.

Tally-ho!

Philbin Mum as Questions Surround Tannehill

I've backed, supported, and even praised Ryan Tannehill in his first three seasons under center for the Miami Dolphins. It's no secret that I'm pro-Tannehill, and if it still somehow is then you've been living under a rock for the past three years.

So when I begin to have concerns, there's a problem.

Q: Will Ryan Tannehill start on Sunday?

A: We'll decide our game plan before we leave to play Oakland.

Yeah, there's a problem.

Joe Philbin's words, or lack thereof, spoke volumes earlier today, as he was noncommittal several times when asked about the status of Ryan Tannehill for Sunday's game.

Multiple times, in multiple different ways, was he asked about Tannehill starting on Sunday.

Multiple times, in multiple different ways, did he deflect the question.

Folks, for the first time in a while, we have a QB controversy in South Florida.

Tannehill has struggled so far this season in a way I haven't seen him in quite some time. To me, he's regressed... big time.

The pocket presence has regressed. The accuracy, while never great, has regressed. The decision making has regressed. Don't just take my word for it, look at his numbers. He's on track for career lows in nearly every statistical category.

But let's be clear here, it's not all on him. Not by a long shot.

Receivers are dropping balls at a historical pace. In fact, they lead the league in drops through the first three weeks.

The protection, so good in the first week, has gotten progressively worse over the past two games.

And then you have the play calling. This, to me, is the biggest issue in Miami right now.

If Ryan Tannehill's on the hot seat, you better believe Bill Lazor is right there with him, because he's made some beyond questionable calls.

Down by six, 12 minutes to go, ball in KC territory, second down and one. Lamar Miller is in the midst of a career game, and is seemingly unstoppable on every carry.

Pass. Incomplete.

Pass. Incomplete.

Punt.

Game.

I just don't understand. On a day when all the fingers are pointing at Ryan Tannehill, how are they not pointed at Lazor as well?

It's not just the decisions, either. It's the plays themselves.

I've said it time after time time after time after time again... Ryan Tannehill is NOT A POCKET PASSER. He's arguably one of your most athletic players on offense. So why do Joe Philbin and Bill Lazor insist on making him a pocket passer? Why are there not more read options being called? Where are the roll outs?

Why does Tannehill sit in the collapsing pocket and take a sack or throw an incompletion when he has all the tools in the world to run the football?

Yes, some of it is on Tannehill. But if you don't think some of it is a product of poor coaching then you're delusional.

Ryan Tannehill has played poorly so far in this young season. He'll tell you that himself.

But if a player is going to suck, for lack of a better term, then shouldn't you allow him to suck on his own terms?

Joe Philbin and Bill Lazor need to open up the playbook, give Tannehill the freedom to run around, throw down field, and use his athletic ability next Sunday against Oakland. Let him play his style of football, and then, if he still sucks, make the change.

If you do it now, after the play calling and game plans you've thrown out there over the first three weeks, then it's not fair to the team, the fans, and, most importantly, to Tannehill.

But make no mistake about it, the seats are hot in South Florida. They're basically burning at this point. And when you have a desperate coach, fighting for a job, there really is no telling what he'll do.

So don't be surprised if Matt Moore gets the call in six days. Personally, I don't agree with it, but I won't be surprised by it.

When backs are against the wall, anything can happen.

And backs are so against the wall right now, it's one loss away from crashing down.

Chiefs beat Dolphins 34-15

Just pathetic. This one goes on the coaching staff, the special teams, and the tackling.

Third down and ONE. Down by 6. Lamar Miller is running all over the KC defense.

Pass. Sack. Punt. Ball game.

Bill Lazor needs has to answer A LOT of questions after this game, because he was nothing short of abysmal.

But it's not just him who has to answer. It's Darren Rizi too, because the special teams was beyond bad.

How many back breaking, long returns is this unit going to give up before they figure it out?

Yes, Jarvis Landry had some huge returns. So what? The bad far outweighed the good, and it cost Miami a win.

The other negatives?

Pass protection. Catching. Holding on to the football too long. Third down coversions, on both sides of the ball.

You name it.

The Dolphins are the superior team... On the field.

But on the sidelines? Not. Even. Close.

Should be a fun trip to London.

Dolphins trail Chiefs 21-15 after third quarter

Well, things have certainly picked up.

An Odrick strip sack led to a Tannehill to Hartline TD.

Following a KC score, a 75 yard return from Jarvis Landry set up a Sturgis FG.

After a Miami punt, Alex Smith was sacked in the endzone to make it a six point game.

The Chiefs face a third down inside their own 15 to begin the final quarter.

Buckle. Up.

Chiefs lead Dolphins 14-3 at halftime

So many mistakes.

With as good as an opening quarter the defense, it was an equally awful second.

Knile Davis gashed Miami defenders, breaking tackles all the way towards a 21 yard TD run.

After another Miami punt, TE Travis Kelce found the endzone.

The Dolphins finally got on the board with a Sturgis chip shot FG at the end of the half.

Ryan Tannehill has played well. His reviewers have not.

Mike Wallace dropped a pass, although he's had a good day.

Landry dropped one.

Gibson dropped one.

The pass protection has also been suspect, and even though the running game has done well, you can only run so much down two scores.

Kansas City gets the ball to begin the second half. Miami MUST get a stop, because they have a whole lotta ground to make up.

To the third.

Chiefs, Fins scoreless after first quarter

The slow starts are beginning to become a troubling trend on this team.

Good opening kickoff return from Landry...

Punt.

Lamar Miller run gets into KC territory...

Holding call, then punt.

Dropped passes from Wallace and Landry.

A lot of pressure on Tannehill.

Awful, awful play calling.

The defense has played spectacular.

Miami better hope it stays that way.

Charles inactive, Clay active as Fins, Chiefs nearing kickoff

Partly cloudy afternoon in Miami, as the Dolphins and Chiefs are just about 90 minutes away from kickoff.

The big pre kickoff news involves running back Jamaal Charles, who has been declared inactive for today's game. As expected, Knile Davis will start in his place.

The other big news for Miami is the status for TE Charles Clay, who WILL play in today's game after being questionable all week.

The inactives for Miami include:

RB Knowshon Moreno, C Mike Pouncey, LB Koa Misi, G Shelley Smith, DL Terrence Fede, LB Jordan Tripp, and OG Billy Turner.

The other inactives for Kansas City include:

QB Murray, WR Wilson, RB De'Anthony Thonas, S Eric Berry, OG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and DE Damion Square.

The horrific news on the day is the uniforms for Miami.. No, they are not dawning the all aqua look during the AQUA OUT! They will be in all white while the entire stadium is aqua.

Uh..

Anyways, The Chiefs will be in the red tops and white bottoms.

Kickoff is right around the corner. The live blog is soon to follow.

See you there.

Gameday: Who Has the Edge? PLUS Prediction

Welcome to your third Miami Dolphins game day of the year, as the Fins and Chiefs are just five short hours away from kicking things off in Sun Life Stadium.

As I've told you all week, this is not only a game the Dolphins could win, but this is a game they absolutely SHOULD win.

Why?

Well, how nice of you to ask:

WHO HAS THE EDGE?

When the Dolphins run the ball: If Knowshon Moreno was healthy and playing then this would be a no brainer. Kansas City ranks 22nd against stopping the run, giving up 125 yards a game, while the Dolphins rank 9th in the league, averaging 131 yards a game. HOWEVER, lets not kid ourselves here, all of that is because of Knowshon's week one performance, and without him I just don't see as much production out of Lamar Miller, Damien Williams, and Daniel Thomas (yes, he's back). EDGE: Even

When the Chiefs run the ball: Not 100% sure if Jamaal Charles plays today, however, I am 100% sure that he won't be 100%. Expect to see a heavy dose of backup Kniles Davis, who scored two touchdowns last week, but don't sleep on him, because he'll burn you if not contained. KC has averaged 100 yards through two games on the ground, while Miami has give up 101 on average through the first two weeks. Sounds even, right? Not without Charles. EDGE: Miami

When the Dolphins pass the ball: This is something I harped on a few days ago, so I won't spend much time on it here. Bottom line? Kansas City has a below average secondary and pass rush, which means Ryan Tannehill should excel today. For more, click here. EDGE: Miami

When the Chiefs pass the ball: Alex Smith had a nice rebound game last week after an awful week one performance, but does he scare you? Dwayne Bowe isn't near the receiver he used to be, Jamaal Charles isn't there to bail him out, and the duo of Travis Kelce and Anthony Fasano, while nice, isn't intimidating. Most importantly, however, are the guys protecting Smith. Long story short, Cam Wake and company should have a field day. For more on that, again, click here. EDGE: Miami

PREDICTION

Miami is right where I expected them to be after two games, and now, it's time to pounce on a weak schedule going into the bye week in a few weeks. I said they'd be 3-1 at that point, and I absolutely believe it's possible. It just has to start today. I think it will.

Final: Miami 24 Kansas City 17

Alright, just a few more hours until the annoyingly late 4:25 kickoff in South Florida.

Come back beforehand and get the latest pre game new, notes, and inactives for both teams, as well as an answer to possibly the biggest question of the day:

Will the Dolphins dawn the all-aqua uniforms for the first time since 2002? Remember, it's an "aqua out" today. Whatever that means.

So come back, find out, then watch the first quarter and come back AGAIN for the beginning of the quarter-by-quarter blog.

5 hours.

Week three in the NFL: Picks and Predictions

Last week's record: 8-7

Overall record: 15-15

Chargers @ Bills: I’d take a bullet for Philip Rivers and I don’t care who knows it.

Pick: Chargers 24 Bills 20

Cowboys @ Rams: Is Dallas’ defense kind of sneaky good? They’ve so far shut down Colin Kaepernick and Jake Locker (two games in a row for Jake?! #recordwatch), and have looked relatively respectable in the first eight quarters. If Jason Garrett continues to remember he has a running back, this team could be on to something.

Pick: Cowboys 26 Rams 17

Redskins @ Eagles: Does RGIII ever start in this league again? A silly question two years ago is now a legitimate one. As for Kirk Cousins, I think he keeps Washington in this one, but I just don’t think he has the firepower to keep up with Foles, McCoy, Sproles, Maclin, Ertz, Coo- my hands hurt.

Pick: Eagles 33 Redskins 24

Texans @ Giants: Houston has benefited from a cupcake schedule thus far. The Giants have benefited from… never mind. They’re bad. They’re really, really bad. I pose the question yet again: Does Tom Coughlin survive the season?

Pick: Texans 21 Giants 17

Vikings @ Saints: Whats the perfect cure to an 0-2 start? Playing a Matt Cassel led team, at home, that’s so knee deep in national controversy that it makes the Miami locker room scandal look like a walk in the park.

Pick: Saints 35 Vikings 14

Titans @ Bengals: Jake Locker was 6-14 with an interception at one point last week. What are the kids saying nowadays? lol? Cincinnati’s defense could have a field day this week.

Pick: Bengals 27 Titans 17

Ravens @ Browns: Give Cleveland credit, they’re a Pittsburgh field goal away from being 2-0 right now. However, I have a bad feeling about them playing a Baltimore team with 10 days off. Also, anyone else find it weird that Brian Hoyer celebrates winning the exact same way he mourns losing?

Pick: Ravens 26 Browns 19

Packers @ Lions: A little surprised at how outmatched Green Bay looked in the first half last week. If that secondary got burned by Geno Smith, how do you think they’ll fare against Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson? (Did I just type “Geno Smith” and “burned” in the same sentence?)

Pick: Lions 33 Packers 30

Colts @ Jaguars: No thanks. I can’t think of a game I want to watch less.

Pick: Colts 28 Jaguars 14

Raiders @ Patriots: Never mind, I can.

Pick: Patriots 26 Raiders 7

49ers @ Cardinals: DREW! Loved that game last week. Just come out, buckle it up for the first time in three years, and casually get your team the win. Gotta respect that. However, the reality is the QB of this team doesn’t matter, because their defense is going to keep them in every game they play. You’re gonna see more of the same here, but I think the result is going to be different.

Pick: 49ers 16 Cardinals 13

Broncos @ Seahawks: What’s worse than playing the team that emasculated you on national television at the loudest stadium in the country? Playing the team that emasculated you on national television at the loudest stadium in the country when their defense is coming off a shockingly bad loss. #prayforpeyton

Pick: Seahawks 34 Broncos 17

Steelers @ Panthers: Now this is a good football game. A well rested Pittsburgh team playing a confident, undefeated Carolina team in primetime with Al Michaels on the call. As always, I need an upset, I have an upset, and, again, as always, I’m not confident about it.

Pick: Steelers 20 Panthers 17

Bears @ Jets: One question, who’s going to cover Brandon Marshall? To misquote the great Rick Petino, Darrelle Revis isn’t walking through that door. Also, loved the way the Jets lost that game on Sunday. So Jets it hurts.

Pick: Bears 24 Jets 16

Big game tomorrow. Huge opportunity. Miami should win this game, folks. They're the better team, as I've told you all week long.

Better offense. Better defense. More playmakers. Home field advantage. "Aqua out" at Sun Life Stadium (no, I haven't confirmed whether the Dolphins will dawn the all aqua look for the first time since 2002, but I wouldn't be shocked).

Bottom line? This game has a Miami win written ALL OVER IT; it's their's for the taking..

In about 21 hours they'll have to go out and do just that.

One day.

Matchups Miami Could, Should Expose on Sunday

Alright, the countdown has reached three, as the Dolphins and Chiefs are roughly 72 hours away from kickoff in South Florida.

If you follow me, you know I think Miami wins this game. I love this matchup for the Dolphins as much as I hated the Buffalo one. Hint.. that was a lot.

I think Miami has the better unit in all three aspects of the game. I think their defense is better, their pass rush is better, their offense is better (on paper, at least), and their receiving core is better.

Think about it.. who would you rather, Miami's receivers or Kansas City's receiver?

Miami's defensive line or Kansas City's?

Miami's secondary or Kansas City's?

Ryan Tannehill or Alex Smith? Okay, this one's a toss up because these two are secretly twin brothers.

My point is this, when picking a game, and deciding whether it's a good matchup or not, look at the two teams in question and ask yourself: Who would you rather have?

Right now, it's almost a clean sweep across the board in favor of the Dolphins.

On that note, let's delve a lithe further into a couple specific matchups I believe Miami MUST expose on Sunday in order to make me look really smart and win the football game.

Number one has got to be the Chiefs secondary. It's just not very good, folks. In-fact, through two games this group ranks 19th in league in passing yards per game with 240.

Between Sean Smith (yes, that Sean Smith), Eric Berry (who's listed as questionable), Husain Abdullah (who's also banged up), and Marcus Cooper (who?), Miami should be able to dominate through the air on Sunday. Look for Bill Lazor's new look, up-tempo, big play offense to finally take flight this week.

The second machup that should have fans drooling is the Miami pass rush against a Kansas City offensive line that has given up six sacks through the first two games.

In short, this unit really, really misses some guy named Branden Albert.

They've been decimated by injuries (LG Jeff Allen is on IR), suspensions (RG Donald Stephenson is serving a four-gamer) and inexperience- only one starter remains from last January's playoff loss.

That one starter? Eric Fisher, who ranks 63rd out of 66 left tackles. By comparison, Branden Albert, the guy they let Miami take, ranks, um.. oh yeah, first.

Between Cam Wake, Randy Starks, Jared Odrick, and Olivier Vernon, Alex Smith could and should be in for a long, long day on Sunday.

If the Dolphins can expose and dominate these two areas, expect them to get back on the winning track on Sunday. If they don't, then it could be another long day for the Fins.

And worse yet, it'll be a missed opportunity.

Miami could, and should, win this football game.

Areas of Concern for Dolphins Through Two Weeks

Alright, one more look back before (thankfully) moving on to Kansas City.

I've noticed a few places on this team that, well, concern me through the teams first two games. I'm not saying these can't be fixed, won't be fixed, but it so far hasn't been and if they keep up this team is going to be in real trouble this season.

For example:

- The passing offense: This one goes on everybody. It starts, in my opinion, with Tannehill, but Bill Lazor is a CLOSE second. Why? I don't like the play calling at all so far. Too many deek and dunk passes. Not enough big plays. How many 20+ yard passes did Miami attempt Sunday? Zero.

That goes on the offensive line for not giving Tannehill time, Tannehill for not being accurate, and also Lazor, for simply not calling the greatest of plays. Maybe he's not confident in Tannehill? If that's the case then get over it, and give the kid a chance. With the running game on the mends right now, this part of the offense will be crucial going forward.

- Accuracy: I'm not going to harp on this one. We all know Tannehill has to hit receivers in stride better. It's the key to the offense.

- Right guard: Shelly Smith is hurt, and his status is up in the air for Sunday. That means Dallas Thomas would get the start. That's a problem, folks. A big one.

- Charles Clay/Brian Hartline: Where have these two been? I can count on one hand how many catches both have... COMBINED. Clay is banged up, I'll give him that. But Hartline? Again, this is a collective effort.

- Dropped passes: Speaking of Clay, he had a huge drop on Sunday. So did Lamar Miller, who dropped a third down strike from Tannehill. Had he caught it he may still be running. Dion Sims dropped a TD against New England. It's starting to become a troubling trend.

- Special Teams: Why did Miami lose to Buffalo? This unit had A LOT to do with it. I think Miami is seriously missing Don Jones.

- The secondary: Too many WIDE OPEN RECEIVERS. Julian Edleman two weeks ago, and now Sammy Watkins on Sunday. There are just too many breakdowns right now in coverage.

I did not put the linebackers in this group. Surprisingly, they've played pretty well. The defensive line has also stopped the run for the most part. I also didn't put the running game in here, because with Moreno out, well, that's just obvious.

Alright, time to move on. It's a new week, a big week, and a very winnable week.

These are concerning problems, but none that I think mediocre teams like Kansas City and Oakland will expose. I said it in preseason and I'll say it again now, Miami should come out of this first quarter at 3-1. Right now, I believe they're right on track.

It's a marathon, not a sprint, folks. The sky isn't falling after one loss against, as I told you, the toughest defense Miami would play all year long.

Let's move on.

5 days.

Bills dominate Dolphins 29-10

Awful.

The offensive line was awful.

The defensive line was awful.

The special teams unit was awful.

Hate to say I saw it coming, but...

For some reason this is just a bad matchup for Miami, plain and simple.

And to make matters worse, Knowshon Moreno is our indefinitely. No, that's not official yet, but it doesn't take a doctor to realize that that was a bad, bad injury.

Just a bad matchup. A bad game. A bad, bad loss.

Bills lead Dolphins 23-10 after third quarter

An opening Miami drive ended in a Sturgis FG.

However, a Spiller kick return put the Bills up by 13.

Miami would come back with a Mike Wallace TD.

HOWEVER, a Sammy Watkins TD brought it back to a 13 point game.

To the fourth.

Bills lead Dolphins 9-0 at halftime

This is September, right?

Because watching this game, you'd think it was December all over again.

Ryan Tannehill has been sacked a billion times. Some on him, some on the line.

With Moreno out there has been ZERO running game.

The defense has held up. Besides the fact that they forgot Sammy Watkins plays on the team. He's been WIDE OPEN all day long.

Somehow, someway Miami is only down 9-0.

The offense will get the ball to begin the third quarter. Unless something changes, I don't have high hopes.

Let's see what adjustments they make.

Bills lead Dolphins 6-0 after first quarter

Pretty much a disastrous first quarter for Miami.

A Dan Carpenter FG was followed by a Buffalo blocked punt, that was then followed by a another Carpenter FG.

The defense has kept this game in tact.

Offensively, the big story was Knowshon Moreno, who was taken to the locker room with a wrist injury.

That's putting it lightly, folks. It looked bad. Really bad.

He's out for the rest of the game.

Miami is lucky to only be down 6-0.

To the second.

Dolphins, Bills Ready to Renew Rivalry; full inactive list

It's a gorgeous day in upstate New York, as the Dolphins and Bills are about 75 minutes away from kickoff at "The Ralph."

Here are Miami's inactives:

Mike Pouncey

Koa Misi

Jordan Tripp

Bruce Gaston

Jason Fox

Billy Turner

Terrence Fede

Obviously the big one here is Misi, but that was expected. In his place expect Jason Trusnik to start. Philip Wheeler is also set to make his 2014 debut after missing last week's game.

Buffalo is in all white. Miami will wear the aqua tops for the first time this season.

Kickoff is at 1:05. The live blog follows the end of the first quarter.

Big game. Enough said.

75 minutes.

Gameday: Three Keys to a Dolphins Win PLUS Prediction

We've reached week #2 here in the NFL, as your Miami Dolphins are just four hours away from kicking things of with the Buffalo Bills.

Today is a big one for Miami, for a couple reasons.

Divison game. Hostile environment. Nemisis. Respect.

Remember, as I said earlier this week, last week was a great start for this team. But what good does it do if Miami throws up a dud today?

So, how do the Dolphins get that coveted second win? GLAD YOU ASKED.

Enjoy:

1. Hold the edge and tackle: There are two reasons why Buffalo is a bad matchup for Miami. Number one is their running game.

CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson are Dolphin DESTROYERS, folks. Spiller, in particular, is just a problem for this defense. I've said it for three seasons now.

The Dolphins do not do well against fast running backs, they just don't. Not allowing Spiller to get outside, and then tackling him if he does. will be HUGE today for this defense.

2. Keep Ryan Tannehill upright: And here's reason #2 this team is a problem: Their defensive front. Yikes.

Mario Williams, Kyle Williams, Marcell Dareus, and Jerry Hughes are a fierce front four, and gave this offensive line absolute fits last year. Remember the infamous Clabo vs. Williams beatdown? Remember Ryan Tannehill limping off the field last December?

If this offense is to have a chance today they'll have to keep their QB upright, there's just no way they win if they don't.

3. Limit the misses: As I told you earlier this week, even though this offense put up 33 points last Sunday, they could have put up 50.

Dion Sims dropped a TD. Mike Wallace and Lamar Miller fumbled. Tannehill threw a costly interception. Somehow, someway, Miami overcame those mistakes, but don't count on history to repeat itself today.

Teams cannot turn the ball over three times, and miss countless scoring opportunities, and expect to win, ESPECIALLY in Buffalo. It's time to take the next step and start converting every scoring chance that presents itself, and it has to start today.

PREDICTION

I admit it, I made a mistake last week in picking against my instincts. All summer long I had Miami winning that game and losing today, that's just the way I saw it for some reason.

Unfortunately for me, I don't learn from my mistakes very well, so I'm going to go against my instincts AGAIN and pick Miami in this football game. Buffalo is NOT a good matchup for these Dolphins, they're just not. But I'm willing to believe they've turned the corner and are out to seek revenge today.

We'll see.

Final: Miami 27 Buffalo 17

Alright, folks, that's it for now. I'm traveling this morning, so don't expect the pre game blog at it's usual 11:30 time, but I should have it for you shortly after.

And, as always, follow the live, quarter by quarter blog, throughout the game.

Four hours.

Week 2 in the NFL: Picks and Predictions

Mediocre start to the season last week. Time to rebound.

Read em. Weep. Repeat.

Last week's record: 7-8

Overall record: 7-8

Jaguars @ Redskins: Chad! Chad! Chad! The only thing I love more than watching Chad Henne casually put up a billion yards in the first half is watching Chad Henne absolutely collapse when the game is on the line. It just makes me feel silly all over. As for Washington, I really don’t know what to say at this point. They are just unfathomably bad in every facet of the game. The demise of RGIII has been tough to watch.

Jaguars: 20 Redskins 16

Cowboys @ Titans: Hey, Tony… GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR…. Come on, dude! You’re my fantasy QB! I invested $100 in this league and that’s what you give me? It’s like a cruel little game at this point with Tony Romo and the Cowboys. they’ll probably win this game, because it would just be classic Dallas, but I’m not touching them with a ten foot pole right now. Hey, on the bright side, at least last week’s game got them prepared for a hostile, road environment. So they got that going for them.

Pick: Cowboys 21 Titans 24

Cardinals @ Giants: Does Tom Coughlin survive this season? Honestly, does he? This may be the worst team in football. No chance they win this game. They’ll be lucky if they even score.

Pick: Cardinals 23 Giants 13

Patriots @ Vikings: Hey Tom, how’s the ground taste? Wow, what a beautiful sight that was last week. Who do we think Giselle yelled at after the game? What wife did she just lay into? Man, to be a fly on that wall. With all that being said, yeah, I’m picking the Patriots. Bill and Tom don’t go 0-2 (do they?)

Pick: Patriots 27 Vikings 20

Saints @ Browns: How many big macs did Rob Ryan just crush after that defensive performance? Honestly. Some people chain smoke. Some people dip. And then you have Rob Ryan, who I imagine just demolishes food when he’s angry. Luckily for him, the Browns offense isn’t quite as potent as Atlanta’s, so they should rebound here, and they’ll need to, because falling to 0-2 in an improved NFC South could be trouble.

Pick: Saints 30 Browns 17

Falcons @ Bengals: Two solid offenses. One solid defense. I’ll go with the Bungles.

Pick: Falcons 24 Bengals 27

Lions @ Panthers: Still trying to wrap my head around that second Calvin Johnson touchdown, and I still don’t know what was crazier: The fact that Stafford had the nuts to make that throw, or the fact that Johnson caught it. Either way, this Lions offense is big time, there’s no doubting that. However, SuperCam is back, and that Carolina defense is just a smidgeon better than the Giants’ (okay, leaps and bounds).

Pick: Lions 23 Panthers 24

Rams @ Buccaneers: Holy cow, how bad were these two last week? Really Josh McCown? All I have to say is, thanks for validating all my doubts over the past four months. As for the Rams, Two (disgusting) word(s): Austin Dillon.

Pick: Rams 9 Buccaneers 17

Seahawks @ Chargers: You know the NFL is back when Philip Rivers spikes a ball in frustration once a drive. Gotta love him. No way the (go) Chargers (go) drop to 0-2 to begin the year. Not at home. I need an upset, I have an upset. And no, I’m not at all confident about it.

Pick: Seahawks 20 Chargers 23

Texans @ Raiders: I’ve stared at this screen for 15 minutes trying to think of something clever to say about this game, but I’ve got nothin’. This is a real toss up. I liked how Derrick Carr looked last week, but can he handle that Houston defense? Even without Jadaveon Clowney, I don’t think he’s up to it. The beard prevails!

Texans 20 Raiders 13

Jets @ Packers: Yeah, ok.

Pick: Jets 14 Packers 31

Chiefs @ Broncos: Alex Smith LED THE TEAM IN RUSHING ATTEMPTS LAST WEEK. That makes me giggle. Andy, Andy, Andy. You’ll never learn.

Pick: Chiefs 17 Broncos 28

Bears @ 49ers: I still like Chicago, I really do. They just ran into a really good Buffalo defense last week, that’s all. Don’t worry, things are looking up this… wait, never mind. San Francisco is still a really good football team.

Pick: Bears 20 49ers 30

Eagles @ Colts: Nice little comeback for Andrew Luck last week (*copied and pasted from every other game of his career). Unfortunately, it was too little to late for the Colts. But that offense looked good in the second half, as did the defense, and at home, on a Monday night, I think they can pull this one off. Just don’t get up by to much, apparently the Eagles like that sort of thing.

Pick: Eagles 27 Colts 30

Game day morning is just TWELVE HOURS AWAY. Come back tomorrow morning for all your Miami Dolphins coverage, including my pick.

And, as always, make sure to follow the live, quarter by quarter, blog throughout tomorrow's game.

One. Day.

Bills, Dolphins Final Injury Reports

I'm traveling right now so the posts will be sporadic for the next day or so.

For Miami, LB Philip Wheeler will play Sunday, as he's listed as probable on the final injury report.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for counterpart Koa Misi, whose bum ankle appears to be on the verge of keeping him out of this one. Misi is listed as doubtful.

Here's the rest of the report:

Out: C Mike Pouncey (hip), DL Terrence Fede (knee), LB Jordan Tripp (chest)

Doubtful: G Billy Turner (foot), LB Koa Misi (ankle)

Probable: RB Knowshon Moreno (shoulder), DE Derrick Shelby (knee), TE Dion Sims (neck), WR Mike Wallace (hamstring), DT Randy Starks (toe), LB Philip Wheeler (thumb), S Walt Aikens (hand), TE Charles Clay (knee), and LB Chris McCain (illness).

Starks and Wheeler are the ones who had a shot at missing the game, so them being listed as probable is a great sign for Miami. Everybody else, like Wallace, Clay, and Moreno are all just formalities.

Kinda like when Brady's on there.

And for Buffalo:

Out: LB Keith Rivers (groin)

Doubtful: TE Lee Smith (toe), S Jonathan Meeks (neck)

Probable: CB Stephon Gilmore (groin), WR Chris Hogan (ankle), and S Aaron Williams (concussion).

Two days.

For Miami Dolphins, Sunday's Sequel Must Surpass its Predecessor

Do you remember when The Hangover first hit the big screens some five years ago?

It was a masterpiece. It broke box office records. It set new ones. It captivated us. Enthralled us. Left us wanting more.

And then, we got more. We got The Hangover 2. And suddenly, as badly as we wanted wanted, needed, a sequel, we quickly wished it had never happened.

It was awful. We felt angry. We felt tricked, duped, and let down. They sucked us in with the opening act, and then crushed us with the sequel.

See where I'm going here?

On Sunday, the sequel to Miami's eye-popping opening act must out perform the original. In fact, it's nothing short of imperative that it does.

Too many times have fans been let down. Too many times have we been sucked in only to be spit out in ruthless fashion.

Last year is just the latest example, when an undefeated September turned into a winless October in the blink of an eye. It was soul crushing. Heart wrenching.

It was just plain disgusting.

But it was also invaluable, because, for the most part, the same core that went through that in 2013 is still here in 2014. And now they have a chance to redeem themselves, to show that they've learned from it, and are now stronger because of it.

And what better time, and team, to redeem yourself against then the Buffalo Bills? The team that contributed to not one, but both of Miami's failed sequels a season ago.

In fact, I'd argue that, while last week's game was big, players have had this one circled for months now. Because this is the team, and the venue, where yet another failed Miami Dolphins sequel took place.

Remember? Of course you do. Who doesn't?

Beat the Jets, and the Steelers, and then, the Patriots. Control your own destiny. Quarterback's playing great. Offense is clicking. The city is rallying around their 8-6 team. The playoffs are all but assured.

Last December, these Miami Dolphins gave us a sensational three weeks. They had the league buzzing. Football was relevant once again in South Beach.

And then.. Buffalo.

Rinse. Wash. Repeat.

You see, it's rather easy to come out with a great movie, a great opening act. There are no expectations, no stakes. Everything is new, exciting, and, if you flop, so what?

But when you start talking about sequels, everything changes. People are interested now, they expect more, they expect better.

On Sunday, Miami MUST be better. Ryan Tannehill has to hit Mike Wallace when he's open. Lamar Miller has to hold on to the football. Dion Sims has to catch touchdown passes when they hit him in the hands.

The Miami Dolphins were impressive on Sunday, there's no doubting that. It was as impressive of a premiere as I've ever seen from this franchise.

But if Sunday's sequel is more Hangover 2 then it is Empire Strikes Back, then ask yourself this:

Does the opening act really matter?

A look back, a look ahead, and other notes as Bills week begins

I want to look ahead, I NEED to look ahead, but I just can't yet.

I still have some thoughts:

- Ryan Tannehill said something in his post game presser that really stuck out to me. Something along the lines of, our offense missed on a lot of plays out there, if we hit on 70% of those it could be scary...

And that got me thinking.. He's right. He's really, really right.

Mike Wallace was open on for a touchdown in the first half, and Tannehill, under pressure, under threw him and was picked off... There's seven points.

Lamar Miller fumbled in New England territory on the back end of a long run during a promising Miami drive.

Wallace was open in the end zone in the second quarter. He couldn't keep his feet in/Tannehill threw it slightly out of bounds and the end result, instead of seven, was three.

Dion Sims also dropped a perfect 28 yard touchdown from Tannehill. Just flat out dropped it.

That's roughly three touchdowns Miami potentially screwed itself out of... 21 points!

Could this team have really put up 50+ points on Sunday? No way, right? Well, think about it.

Tannehill's right. It could be scary. (Not that I'm surprised by that. I've been telling you this since May.)

- Speaking of Tannheill, it's no secret that I'm one his bigger supporters... With that being said, I have no problem telling you that he didn't really have a great game on Sunday. In fact, he barely had a good game. He missed receivers, was inaccurate at times, and made some questionable decisions.

His numbers didn't look awful at the end of the day, and he did pull it together in the second half, but there's no question he MUST improve. There really is none, just ask Bill Lazor, who told the media yesterday the passing offense needs to get better, and they need to do it fast.

However, the beauty of this new offensive line, and the addition of Knowshon Moreno, is that, unlike the past two years, Tannehill doesn't need to be perfect in order for this team to win.

If the running game is going to produce like that more times than not, and the defense is going to be that dominant, then Tannehill can get away with playing like he did on Sunday.

Do I expect that to happen every week? No, absolutely not. Tannehill must improve and it starts this week.

But the difference with this offense and this team is, unlike last year, Tannehill can have off days and get away with it.

Now, to the Bills:

- I've said it a million times if I've said it once: This Bills defense will be the BEST unit Miami faces all year long. They controlled the line of scrimmage against the Bears last week, and is going to be a HUGE test on Sunday for this offensive line.

- Fred Jackson or CJ Spiller? They're both Dolphin killers, and they're both healthy. As Cam Wake said today, pick your poison. Miami MUST tackle well.

- The last time the Dolphins and Bills had winning records and played each other? The Clinton administration was still in office. Yeah, let that marinate for a second.

- EJ Manuel? Still not buying what he's selling. Chicago's defense really isn't very good.

- Brent Grimes NEEDS to be on Sammy Watkins Sunday. I don't care if he's a rookie or not, he's the best receiver on that team.

- New linebacker Kelvin Shepherd practiced today and will wear 97. Weird for a linebacker, but I'll allow it.

- I would't be surprised if he gets a good amount of playing time on Sunday. Especially considering the scary lack of depth at linebacker right now.

Koa Misi is dealing with an ankle injury, Philip Wheeler, who returned to practice today, has a thumb problem, and now Chris McCain missed practice today with an illness, this after playing Sunday's game with a minor injury.

Don't be surprised to see 97 in the game on Sunday.

More tomorrow.

5 days.

Pats, Dolphins Keys to the Game REVISITED; Ellerbe to IR

(Dolphins.com)

It's been a victory Monday in Davie, FL, where the Dolphins continue to celebrate their big week one win yesterday against the Patriots.

Speaking of that win, the Dolphins did so much right in that second half, didn't they?

They blocked well. They ran well. The passed well. The rushed the passer well.

It's hard to pick just one!

Luckily for you, I'll pick five things. If you remember, I went over five specific things Miami needed to do yesterday in order to win. And I have to tell you, I can't recall a game over the past two years where the team actually executed all five things like they did yesterday.

Let's revisit them:

1. Create pressure without blitzing. Yeah, check this one off your list. Four, count them, F-O-U-R second half sacks for the defense yesterday, and none came off the blitz. Cam Wake had two, Jared Odrick had one, and so did Olivier Vernon. Executed to absolute perfection.

2. Use the HEAT. The heat index was 95 yesterday, which is EXACTLY why 1 pm games are an advantage for this team. You cannot sit there and tell me that the temperature didn't affect the Pats just a tiny bit in the second half. They looked slower, older, and out of shape. And the second half splits only strengthen that argument. I wanted a fourth quarter lead so we could pin our ears back, use the heat, and win the game. Check, check, and check.

3. Use Knowshon. I've told you for a while now, and is there any more doubt after yesterday? Knowshon Moreno is the starter on this offense. The depth chart may not say it, the coaches may not admit it, but he is. And thank GOODNESS he is. 24 carries, 134 yards, and the game-sealing TD on third and four. Greg Gumbel said it best: Knowshon Moreno put that team on his back.

4. Be emotional. No question about it, the Dolphins wanted this game more. They were hungrier, more passionate, they hit harder, ran harder, and, in the end, played harder. LB Chris McCain cried after the game, his eyes were swollen in the post game interview. Think he wanted it more yesterday? Be emotional, use the crowd, and win the game. Perfect.

5. Eliminate GRONK. 4 catches, 40 yards, and a TD. No second half catches. None. The only slip up was when Brent Grimes was matched up with Gronk at the goal line.. that's a problem all day long. Besides that there was no magic between Brady and Gronkowski on this day. Great second half adjustments by Kevin Coyle and the defensive secondary.

Again, this may be the first time all five keys were accomplished to perfection. Do things need to be corrected? Sure. Cleaned up? Absolutely. But it was a near perfect start for your 1-0 Miami Dolphins.

ELLERBE OUT FOR YEAR

One bit of sobering news on this otherwise happy Monday. LB Dannell Ellerbe left yesterday's game early on with a hip injury. He remained on the sidelines but never re-entered the game.

Well, it turns out that injury was far more serious than initially thought, because it was announced today that Ellerbe has been placed on the IR, and will miss the remained of the 2014 season with a hip injury.

Veteran LB Kelvin Shepherd has been brought in to replace Ellerbe. I like Shepherd. He's a good leader, has good experience, and should be just fine.

But this is a tough loss a unit that's already so thin to begin with.

Look for Chris McCain, Jelani Jenkins, and Jason Trusnik to see A LOT more playing time this season.

Check back later for one final post game article before we turn our attention to the Bills.

Alright, you may return to your Victory Monday.

Dolphins score 23 unanswered, beat Pats 33-20

I'll have a more in depth article for you later...

But what a game.

23-0. That was the second half score.

An absolute beat down from YOUR Miami Dolphins.

Where to start? Take your pick:

A Cam Wake strip sack.

A Mike Wallace TD.

A Knowshon Moreno demolition... ALL DAY LONG.

Miami owned the line of scrimmage in the second half. And, subsequently, they owned the game.

33-20.

More reaction later.

But, for now, party on, Dolfans..

You're 1-0..

And a HUGE 1-0 at that.

Dolphins surge past Pats, lead 23-20 after three

What a quarter.

A Sturgis FG made it 20-13.

A Wake sack led to a Brady fumble, which led to a Wallace TD.

A three and out led to another Sturgis FG.

Miami is about to get the ball to begin the final quarter.

Buckle up.

Pats lead Dolphins 20-10 at halftime

Self inflicted wounds.

That will be the story of this game if Miami cannot find a way to win in the second half.

The offense has moved and moved and moved the ball...

Interception.

Fumble.

ANOTHER fumble.

20-10.

First it was a Mike Wallace fumble.

Then it was a bad pass to Wallace that turned into an INT.

Then it was a Lamar Miller fumble on a big run.

You simply cannot turn the ball over against a team like the Patriots.

Miami did manage a Sturgis FG towards the end of the half to pull within seven, but Tom Brady would drive down field and lead the Pats to a FG right before intermission to bring it back to ten.

The offense has looked good. They've run well. They've blocked well. They've thrown well.

The defense has put pressure on Brady all day, but they must stiffen up in the run game and find a way to cover Julian Edleman.

Miami will get the ball to begin the second half.

Let's see what adjustments they'll make.

Pats lead Fins 10-7 after first quarter

Great start for the Fins.

A blocked punt by Chris McCain was followed by a Tannehill TD pass to Lamar Miller.

Brady and the Patriots stormed back though with a 13 play drive ending in a Vereen TD.

A Mike Wallace FUMBLE was turned into a Gostkowski FG.

10-7.

To the second.

Inactive List as Dolphins, Patriots Near Kickoff

It's a hot, humid, and muggy afternoon in South Florida, which are perfect conditions as my keys to the game alluded to, as the Dolphins and Patriots are now a mere 90 minutes away from kickoff.

Here are the inactives for Miami:

51 - Pouncey
52 - Wheeler
57 - Tripp
72 - Gaston
74 - Fox
77 - Turner
78 - Fede

No surprises here.

No word on who will start in Wheelers place, but expect a combination of Jelani Jenkins, Jason Trusnik, and Chris McCain.

For New England, the big inactive is WR Aaron Dobson. Obviously Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski will play. Reports say Gronk will play on a more limited snap count.

The Dolphins are in the all white.

New England in the blue tops and grey pants.

Kickoff is at 1:05, and the live blog begins following the first quarter.

See you then!

GO FINS

Gameday: 5 Keys to a Dolphins Win PLUS Prediction

Congratulations! You've made it!

Welcome to the first game day of the season, Dolfans. In just three short hours, your Dolphins will kick things off with the New England Patriots in a HUGE AFC divisional matchup here in week one.

For Miami, there's so much at stake in this game, most notably, respect. As I wrote earlier this week, the Dolphins' collapse at the end of last season lost them a lot of respect around the league, but a win today would earn it all back.

So how do the Fins get said win? Well, glad you asked:

1. Create pressure WITHOUT blitzing. This is, without a doubt, the number one key in today's game. Tom Brady is a hall of fame QB, no arguing that, but he doesn't do well under pressure... ESPECIALLY with a shaky calf. The Miami defense MUST find a way to pressure Brady WITHOUT blitzing. IF they can do that, then expect this defense to have their way with the New England arial attack all day long.

2. Use the HEAT. I spoke to a Patriots writer, who will remain nameless, a while back during a Dolphins practice, and he said something that stuck out to me: The South Florida heat is NO JOKE. People make fun of it, and cast it aside, but I can tell you from first hand knowledge that the Patriots are NOT used to the heat they're going to be dealing with today. That's not just me talking; that's from somebody who covers the team on a daily basis. Miami MUST find a way to take a lead into the 4th quarter. IF they can do that, maybe, just maybe, they can wear Brady and company out and get the win.

3. Use Knowshon. It's no secret that the running game the Dolphins threw out there a season ago simply didn't cut it. However, I believe they have found the solution to the problem in RB Knowshon Moreno. Yes, he only played in one preseason game. And yes, he's allegedly splitting time with Lamar Miller. But make no mistake about it, Knowshon Moreno can absolutely be a difference maker in today's game. How? Use him early. Use him often. And, use him in different looks. IF the Dolphins can find a way to mix Moreno into this game plan, creatively, then they have a chance to catch the all mighty Bill Belichick WAY off guard.

4. Be emotional. Listen, this team has something to prove. I wrote about it earlier this week, and truly believe it. They lost the final two games last season....with a playoff spot on the line. That left a sour taste in EVERYBODY'S mouth. Use that emotion to your advantage. Harness it. Come out early, make a play, and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.

5. Eliminate GRONK. Pretty simple here, folks. No, I don't believe he'll be in there every single play. And no, I don't think he's 100%. HOWEVER, when he IS in there... ELIMINATE HIM. Easier said than done, I know, but if the Dolphins are to win today they MUST find a way to contain and eliminate Ron Gronkowski. IF they can do that, and that's a huge IF, than I believe this Dolphins defense can ultimately overtake the New England offense. Because, lets be honest, after Gronkowski, they're just not that scary.

PREDICTION

I've gone back and forth on this game for months now. I really have. Miami has SO many things going there way today:

The weather.

The new offense.

The home field.

However, I just cannot go against Bill, Tom, and Rob. I just can't do it. Would a Miami win shock me? Absolutely not. But I need to see it first. I know what I'm getting out of Tom Brady and the Patriots offense. I know what I'm getting out of Darrelle Revis. Do I know what I'm getting out of Ryan Tannehill? Do I know what I'm getting out of a relatively injury plagued Dolphins defense?

Too many questions right now. Too many unknowns. I just can't do it.

Final: Patriots 27 Dolphins 24

Week One in the NFL: Picks and Predictions

16 hours. That's it, folks. Take a sleeping pill, tuck in, and go to bed. Because when you wake up it will officially be GAMEDAY.

Predictions time. Can't win them all if you don't win the first one!

Saints @ Falcons: Not quite buying back into the Falcons yet, and Hard Knocks can’t make me!

Pick: Saints: 31 Falcons 23

Vikings @ Rams: Oh boy, this one goes straight to the top in the “who cares” category. Sorry, but Shaun Hill vs. Matt Cassel just doesn’t do much for me.

Pick: Vikings 17 Rams 20

Browns @ Steelers: What’s with all the Brian Hoyer hype? When did he suddenly become a good QB? I don’t get it. #JohnnyClipboard

Pick: Browns 10 Steelers 23

Bengals @ Ravens: The Ravens are going to win this game. Not because they're at home and due for a bounce back year, but because Andy Dalton has too much money in his pocket now that it's weighing him down. Seriously, how's he going to get away from these guys now?

Pick: Bengals 21 Ravens 23

Bills @ Bears: I was silly about this Bills team earlier this summer. The defense is stacked, and the offense has weapons on weapons on weapons. Then I saw them play and remembered EJ Manuel is still their QB.

Pick: Bills 10 Bears 27

Jaguars @ Eagles: Look at good ol’ Checkdown Chad just doing his mediocre thing still. Gotta respect it at this point. Still, Bortles is better, and so are the Eagles.. by a lot.

Pick: Jaguars 13 Eagles 27

Raiders @ Jets: Nothing like a Geno Smith vs. Derrick Carr matchup to start off the season, huh? Gulp. The Jets have the better defense, and that’s huge here.

Pick: Raiders 13 Jets 17

Redskins @ Texans: I really don’t have a good read on either one of these teams. In fact, does anyone? I still believe in RGIII, and I like him to find a way to get it done here. Just watch out for Clowney…and Watt… Gracious. Good luck.

Pick: Redskins 20 Texans 17

Titans @ Chiefs: Everybody seems to like Jake Locker again, huh? Must be the start of a brand new season! Seriously, it’s a tradition like no other. Even if he does last all four quarters here, I still like the Chiefs.

Pick: Titans 16 Chiefs 23

Panthers @ Buccaneers: This should be a good football game. I really like Tampa’s defense (and uniforms), but can the offense keep up with Superman Cam? Don’t think so.

Pick: Panthers 23 Buccaneers 20

49ers @ Cowboys: Where did, like, 75% of the 49ers defense go? Arrested? Suspended? Hurt? Good lord. Come on, fellas, get it together. Tighten up! In my upset of the week, I like Tony Romo (who may or may not be my fantasy QB) and the Cowgirls to pull it off in Jerry’s world.

Pick: 49ers 31 Cowboys 34

Colts @ Broncos: Andrew Luck has done some crazy stuff in his first two seasons. Beating Peyton and the Broncos at home on opening night would top them all. Maybe another time.

Pick: Colts 17 Broncos 30

Giants @ Lions: Really, ESPN? This is the best you could do? Have the Giants even scored yet this preseason? Yikes.

Pick: Giants 13 Lions 23

Chargers @ Cardinals: Well, at least we don’t get Chargers/Raiders for the 158th year in a row, right? Actually not a bad week one finale here. I like Carson and the Birds at home. They’re pretty good there, I hear.

Pick: Chargers 23 Cardinals 27

Alright folks, we've made it. Game Day is TOMORROW. The countdown is OVER.

Make sure to come back in the morning for my Dolphins/Patriots game day preview, along with as, always, my prediction.

16 hours.

Merry Christmas eve!

2014 Season Predictions: Fourth Quarter; Wheeler Ruled OUT Sunday

Alrighty, we've reached the finale of our 2014 season predictions. Does Miami have a strong finish in them? Or do they fold in dramatic fashion YET again?

Here we go:

Week 14:

Baltimore Ravens

All time record against: 5-6

When was the last time Miami beat Baltimore? HINT: Cleo Lemon was their QB. That's right, the epic 2007 battle when an OT Dolphins win in December was their FIRST of the season. Why has it been so long? Well, the Dolphins just don't matchup well with this team. However, this isn't the same Baltimore team Miami is used to facing, and I think with a wildcard spot on the line, at home, the Fins should get it done here.

OUTCOME: WIN

Week 15:

New England Patriots

All time record against: 51-46

New England? In December? Yikes. The last time Miami won in those conditions? 2006. Yeah, I don't think so.

OUTCOME: LOSS

Week 16:

Minnesota

All time record against: 7-4

Love this matchup for the Dolphins. Stopping Adrian Peterson is no easy task, but if this defense can contain him, then Miami should roll to their eighth win.

OUTCOME: WIN

Week 17:

New York Jets

All time record against: 46-50-1

Deja vu, anyone? Season on the line, wild card on the line, at home, against the stinkin' Jets. Haven't we seen this movie before? I think this ending FAVORS the Dolphins. Come on, there's NO WAY this team burns us twice...right? Gulp.

OUTCOME: WIN

Fourth Quarter record: 3-1

FINAL RECORD: 9-7

WHEELER RULED OUT FOR SUNDAY

The final injury report came out for both teams today, and WLB Philip Wheeler has been ruled out for Sunday's game with a thumb injury.

Wheeler has been limited in practice all week, and apparently is not ready to go. In his place expect a combination of Jelani Jenkins, Jason Trusnik, and Chris McCain.

What does this mean? Well, it's no secret that I'm not Wheeler's biggest fan. He is, however, a blitz specialist, so Miami will have to find other ways to attack Brady. As for everything else? Well, if you remember, Wheeler was pulled from last year's Patriots game for poor coverage.

So it's really not going to be that much of a difference this time around.

As for the rest of the injury report:

Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski are QUESTIONABLE for the Patriots... Yeah, okay, whatever you say, Bill.

For Miami, Billy Turner is doubtful with a toe injury, while S Walt Aikens (hand), LB Koa Misi (shoulder), CB Jamar Taylor (hip), and LB Chris McCain (hip) are all probable.

A lot of good stuff coming for you tomorrow, including our first picks and predictions segment of the season.

TWO. DAYS.
