Training Camp Recap: Wednesday and Thursday

The Miami Dolphins were back at it Wednesday and Thursday after their first day off since camp started.  The Quarterback battle continued to be the hot topic around camp as coach Joe Philbin continued to state that the competition is "wide open."  After practice, Chad Johnson talked to the media for the first time since camp opened last week, and as always, didn't disappoint.

But first to the camp highlights:

  • Receivers Brian Hartline and Clyde Gates did not practice again as the former battles a calf injury and the latter a hamstring issue.  Time is beginning to be an issue for Hartline, who missed all of the offseason OTA's.  The new coaching staff has yet to see the fifth year reciever on the field and with 12 recievers competing for six spots Hartline could begin to fall.
  • Speaking of the receiver competition, Roberto Wallace seems poised to grab one of the open spots.  He has earned praise thus far in practice for his height and speed, but his drops have been a thing he must improve upon.
  • Reggie Bush fumbled three times during yesterday's practice.
  • Matt Moore threw two interceptions (by Reshad Jones and Anderson Russell) and fumbled on a strip sack by Randy Starks.  Moore has never been a great practice player, and may need to prove that when preseason games begin as he seems to be giving way to David Garrard, who was once again the better QB in Wednesday's practice.
  • However, Moore came back nicely today, as he started the 11-11 on drills with the first team and hit a couple nice throws to Roberto Wallace.  Once again struggled handling the snap from center Mike Pouncy, though, and that seems to be a bad trend with Moore thus far.
  • The Dolphin defense has looked like the better of the two teams so far, throwing a lot of blitzes at the offense and getting good penetration from the Odrick-Wake-Vernon combo.
  • Rooke Ryan Tannehill took reps with the first team in today's practice.
  • Some Quotes:
  • Coach Joe Philbin on Tannehill's poise after yesterday's practice:  "He's so kind of cool and collected."
  •  "Smart kid, has a great arm, really anticipates where the opening are," tight end Anthony Fasano said of Tannehill after practice today.
  • "I think he's under rated in this league. The best route runner I've ever been around," Ryan Tannehill said today of receiver Davone Bess.
  • Joe Philbin says the Dolphins are 75 percent through installing offense and QB competition is "very close."

Some play-by-play of yesterday's 11-11:

First team offense versus first team defense:

Garrard complete to Reggie Bush who beats Vontae Davis one-on-one, but Davis strips the ball for a fumble.

Garrard complete to Legedu Naanee for 12 yards.

Garrard incomplete when Roberto Wallace drops a pass.

Garrard to Davone Bess for 8 yards.

Garrard incomplete

Third team offense versus second and third team defense:

Tannehill incomplete.

Tannehill to B.J. Cunningham in flat.

Tannehill to Cunningham for 20 yards.

Tannehill to Rishard Matthews for 18 yards.

Tannehill to Michael Egnew in the flat for 4 yards.

The Dolphins will practice again tomorrow, which signals the one week mark until their preseason opener against Tampa Bay.  Until then, enjoy Chad Johnson's interview with the South Florida media after yesterday's practice.  Beware, it is not edited.

Training Camp 2012: Weekend Recap

Forty days.

That's all, folks.  Six more Sunday's to go.  SIX!

August is finally upon us, and so begins the most hectic, intriguing, vastly entertaining six months of the year.  Storylines are everywhere for the Miami Dolphins.

Who gets the nod at Quarterback week one in Houstan?  Is it the rook or the vets?  How will Chad Johnson do between the lines?  Will he even make it that far?  Will new head coach Joe Philbin's pass first, west coast style offense be a smooth transition?  Will Justin Beiber become the next celebrity part-owner of the Miami Dolphins?

None of these are questions we can answer today, no, not even the last one.  Some won't get answered for weeks.  Some will take months before we can get a true answer.  But the one and only thing we know as of today is this:  Football is back, and the 2012 season is right around the corner.

Now to the weekend training camp recap.

  • All three QB's looked relatively sharp in Joe Philbins new offense.  Matt Moore and David Garrard split first teams snaps, and each received pretty good marks from Philbin.  However, I would give the edge to Garrard right now for what it's worth, which isn't much seeing as it's been four days.
  • Didn't think I'd forget Ryan Tannehill, did you?  The kid signed his rookie contract on Saturday and has since particpated in two days of camp.  When asked how he feels about the QB race, Tannehill didn't back down, saying "I feel like i'm in it."
  • Rookie running back Lamar Miller seems poised for a big season from what i've seen and read.  He's fast, explosive, and is already making pro-style cuts.  Look out.
  • Second year receiver Julius Pruitt has earned praise from several teammates over the weekend for his performance as he fights for a roster spot.
  • Speaking of receivers, Brian Hartline has not yet recovered from an offseason calf injury as he's not yet at full speed.  Along the same lines is second year speedster Clyde Gates, who continues to work through a hamstring issue.
  • A bit of a scary scene yesterday at practice when rookie defensive lineman Olivier Vernon hobbled off the field after hurting his ankle during an 11-11 drill.  Vernon did, however, return later.
  • Wide Receiver Braylon Edwards, who spent most of last season injured while with the 49ers, has reportedly worked out for the Dolphins, who are "seriously interested," according to the Miami Herald.
  • The offensive line is still a work in progress behind Jake Long and Mike Pouncey.  The weekend signing of Eric Steinbeck will help, but this could be a weakness going forward for the Dolphins and must garner a lot of attention.
  • The new West Coast style of play has the offense playing at a tempo that would run circles around former coach Tony Sparano.  Offensive Coordinator Mike Sherman has said they could take up to 160 snaps per practice.

The Dolphins have Tuesday off after four days straight of camp.  Players will report back Wednesday morning for an 8:40 practice in Davie.

Boy, it feels good to say that again.

[Update:  Braylon Edwards has agreed to a deal with the Seattle Seahawks.  Source said two teams were in it- Dolphins, and Seahawks.]

Dolphins sign WR Ochocinco to one year deal, per league sources

This from NBC Sports:

"The Ochocinco News Network — a website Ochocinco started as part of his efforts to report news directly from NFL players to the fans — reports that Ochocinco is the newest member of the Dolphins:

“We just got confirmation from Chad Ochocinco that he has just signed with the Miami Dolphins,” the report says. “The 6 time Pro Bowler will now get a chance to finish his career in his home state. More details as they arrive.”

More to come.

Miami Dolphins to be on HBO's Hard Knocks

This from the Palm Beach Post's Ben Volin:  "Philbin announces that the Dolphins will be on Hard Knocks.  Says it was a 'football decision.'"

And with the eighth pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select...

QB, Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M.

For the first time since 1983, yes, nearly 30 years ago, the Miami Dolphins have taken a quarterback in the first round of the NFL draft.  Tannehill now re-joins former head coach Mike Sherman in Miami, now his offensive coordinator, and will quickly fall under the "next franchise QB" status from the Fins faithful.

Oh yeah, the last time Miami took a QB in the first round?

Dan Marino.

I'd say it worked out.

Keep checking back, as once again, Ryan Tannehill is the newest member of the Miami Dolphins.

New Dolphins' regime set to begin 2012 draft

The NFL draft is just about underway, as the Indianapolis Colts are all but on the clock in New York City.

As you can see above, the Miami Dolphins are ready as well for what many are tabbing the most important draft in franchise history.

Experts have nearly unanimously pegged QB Ryan Tannehill as the Fins' number one target, and they could be right.  But hey, does anybody remember the 2007 draft?

Ted Ginn Jr. ring any bells?

Yikes.  The problem may not be the Dolphins not taking Tannehill, but whether or not they get the chance to.  Does Cleveland take him?  Minnesota?  Jacksonville?

Or will he fall right into GM Jeff Ireland's lap?

You'll know the minute it's announced right here on the Dolphinsider, so check back in!

Until then, lets put it to a vote.
