Dolphins squander late lead, lose to Lions 20-16

Another lead, another NFC North opponent, another opportunity to make a huge statement.

Another collapse.

20-16.

Matt Stafford threw a game winning TD on third and 4 with 35 seconds left to beat the Dolphins, who had a three point lead with under three minutes to play.

Once again, the defense simply could not hold. Once again Joe Philbin called two questionable time outs.

Heartbreaking.

The offense had a chance to seal it earlier in the game. They took over with under four minutes left, needing 3 first downs to ice it.

They went three and out.

This was a slugfest. Branden Albert left the game on a cart and is feared to be lost for the season. Cortland Finnegan couldn't finish the game and is headed to the MRI room. Koa Misi was sidelined on the final drive. Ryan Tannehill took an absolute beating.

All for nothing.

Now, there is no shame in losing, on the road, to the second seed in the NFC. Absolutely none.

But, once again, it was the way the Dolphins lost that hurts all the more.

Missed chances. Missed opportunities. Questionable calls.

It just doesn't work. Miami is a good football team. A win today would have moved them to possibly great. But, like so many times before, they came up just short.

Luckily, there is no time to dwell on this one. The Buffalo Bills, also losers today, are coming to town on Thursday night for what I consider an elimination game.

A win, and all of this goes away. Six wins with six to play is a promising outlook for Miami.

But get swept by Buffalo.. At home... In prime time... On national TV?

Stick a fork in them.
