Dolphins' fans must let offseason run its course; GM Ireland speaks to media

Relax.

Take a deep breath and listen.

The new NFL season is barely a week old.  Seven days.  168 hours.

And fans are already looking towards the 2013 draft!  Yes, it's been a rough go of it so far.  Yes, the Dolphins now lack a star receiver.  Yes, the "big offseason QB acquisition" appears to be one David Garrard.  And yes, the defense is now without it's longest tenured player and captain, Yeremiah Bell.

But c'mon people, you must let this thing play out.

It's WAY to early to start a riot outside of the Dolphins complex like a group of "fans" did today.  It's way to early to start looking towards next year's draft when we haven't even gotten to this year's draft!  And it's especially to early to call this season a bust when it's only a week old!

What if your newborn child had a rough first week?  Would you just toss it aside and move on to the second one?  If you answered yes to that then please, seek counseling ASAP.

Coach Joe Philbin hasn't even stepped onto the practice field yet, and fans are already calling for his head on a platter next to GM Jeff Ireland's!

It's understandable people, it really is, but it's also early.  Way to early.  The NFL Draft is still five weeks away for crying out loud!  This Dolphins' team right now is NO WHERE near the team that will be on the field in week one, no where.

Joe Philbin is a smart man.  He's got a plan, he's got a vision, and he's got one of the league's brightest offensive minds, Mike Sherman, and defensive minds, Kevin Coyle, at his side.

Give them more than a week to turn this team around, people.

Let the offseason run its course.

OTHER NEWS:

GM Jeff Ireland did speak to the media today, some quotes:

When asked about players not wanting to come to Miami:  "I absolutely think players and coaches want to be here," he said. "When we talk to people about the Dolphins, they still think highly of this franchise, its history, its direction. They have no problem coming here. And sometimes they don't. Sometimes they make other decisions. But it's a two-way street. We make our decisions also."

When asked about QB David Garrard competing for the starting job with Matt Moore:  "I've been chasing this guy since last year," Ireland said. "He's athletic, he has arm talent, he's got veteran experience, he brings great leadership. We went with a veteran at the position and we talked to Matt and he understands we need to play better at quarterback to get over the hump. So they'll compete and we'll see what happens."

When asked about the current QB situation and the state of the team right now:  "Where we are at this juncture, I'm happy where we are at the quarterback position," he said. "You have to remember we're not even halfway through the player acquisition process. We will continue to leave no stone unturned. We have a process in place that we're following but we're also being flexible. And that means when opportunities arise, we bring players in, we talk to them, we work them out, we visit to see where they're at. And then we make decisions.  I'm not naive to the fact we need more pieces. People think we're blind to that but we're not. We need to have another solid draft. But we're not where we're going to be in August."

And of course, when asked about the protestors outside his office:  "I've heard they're out there," Ireland said. "But I haven't seen them. I don't have a window that gives me a view of them. And we've been pretty busy around here to look anyway."

BREAKING NEWS: Manning informs agent to open discussions with Broncos

ESPN's Chris Mortenson has learned that Peyton Manning has told his agent to open up contract negotiations with the Denver Broncos, and barring any complications Manning will soon join the team as the franchise's next QB.

Mortenson also learned that the team now plans on trading current QB Tim Tebow, who led them to an 8-8 record last season, a division title, and a first round playoff victory over the Steelers.

Will the Dolphins be a player for Tebow now?  Two weeks ago I would have said no way, but at this point you can't rule anything out for owner Stephen Ross and GM Jeff Ireland.

Manning going to the Broncos is the LAST place Miami would have chosen him to go as this now means QB Alex Smith, who the Dolphins have already met with, could return to the 49ers and become the third quarterback to turn down Miami.

Stay Tuned.

Dolphins lose out on yet another QB: Matt Flynn signs with Seahawks

Matt Flynn will NOT be the starting QB for the Miami Dolphins next season.

Sports Illustrated's Peter King has reported that Flynn has agreed on a three year contract with the Seattle Seahawks today, a day after his meeting with the Dolphins.

Time to move on.

Alex Smith met with Miami today after contract talks have stalled with the 49ers as they await a Peyton Manning decision.

David Garrard also met with the Dolphins today.  Garrard did not play last season after being released by the Jaguars a week before the season started.

Oy Vey.

Stay tuned.

Dolphins out of Manning running; Flynn to visit Saturday

Peyton Manning called the Dolphins sometime last night and told them he would not be playing for them next season.

Shocker..

Enough of that, thank goodness.  The reality is the Dolphins were not in it from the get-go.  Heck, they had to ask Dan Marino to call Manning just so they could get a visit!  Manning will either go to Denver, Tennessee, Arizona, or the 49ers, who have emerged as a "sleeper" team within the last hour.

The bad news there?  The Dolphins play all those teams next season with the exception of Denver.

Yikes.

Now on to a QB who actually wants to be in Miami- Matt Flynn.  The "consolation prize," as many view him, will be in Seattle today and will spend tomorrow in Miami visiting with former coach Joe Philbin.  Reports came out today indicating that the Dolphins may try and get some sort of a discount on Flynn's asking price because of his familiarity with Philbin.

This is concerning.

Why haven't the Dolphins gone after Flynn as hard as many people expected?  Does Philbin know something we don't?  Is Flynn not the franchise QB many believe him to be?  The fact that Miami, and many other teams, went after Manning first has dropped Flynn's value considerably, and could save the Dolphins a bundle of money, but still, the question has to be raised as to why Miami isn't as high on Flynn as many thought they would be.

The Dolphins did sign veteran offensive lineman Artis Hicks yesterday, and do look to be going into the 2012 season with a top 10 offensive line.

But will Flynn be the one taking snaps behind it?

We could very well know after tomorrow.

Report: Soliai prepared to re-sign with Dolphins

It's been a rough go of it the last 24 hours for Miami Dolphins' fans.

Peyton Manning?  All but dead.

Brandon Marshall?  Axed, shipped up to Chicago.

But Paul Soliai, the Dolphins Pro Bowl nose tackle?  Looks like he's here to stay.

According to Kim Bokamper, a close Dolphins source, and the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the Dolphins are close to re-signing Soliai after many assumed he was all but done in a Fins uniform.  Soliai was prepared to fly out to Denver to talk with the Broncos, but reports say he has since cancelled his flight.

Hey, it's not Peyton Manning news, but at least it's something people!

Again, stay tuned.

Report: Dolphins pursing WR Manningham

The wide receiver situation right now is not good.

No offense to Davone Bess, Brian Hartline, Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace, but looking at that core group makes me cringe.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported today that the Dolphins are in play for free agent wide receiver Mario Manningham, who is also said to be talking to the Bills and 49ers.  Manningham had a solid year last season with 39 catches, 523 yards, and 4 touchdowns, but he was the number three receiver on the Giants depth chart and has never been a number one target, at least not since his college days at Michigan.

However, with Vincent Jackson and Pierre Garcon already signed, and Laurent Robinson in serious discussions with Jacksonville, Manningham looks like Miami's best bet.

Stay tuned.

Miami Dolphins begin talks with Flynn as they await Manning Decision

The Dolphins reached out to Matt Flynn yesterday to begin serious discussions about acquiring the 26 year old free agent QB.  All this while the team continues to hold out hope that Peyton Manning will come to South Beach.

As I reported yesterday, the Dolphins MUST handle this current situation with care so nobody is offended during the process.  Flynn is in Seattle today, meeting with the Seahawks, but many speculate he will not make a decision until Manning does.

Speaking of Peyton Manning.  His whereabouts today?  Tennessee, meeting with the Titans and owner Bud Adams.  This will be Manning's final stop before making his decision.

Other Dolphins notes:

  • Pro Bowl right guard Eric Winston, 28, will meet with the Dolphins today after being released by Houston on Monday.  If the Dolphins can ink Winston it would be a HUGE signing.

  • The Dolphins have also expressed interest in former Cowboys WR Laurent Robinson who finished the season last year with 54 catches, 858 yards, and 11 TD's despite only starting four games.

  • Oh yeah, one more thing.  Brandon Marshall?  That trade doesn't look so bad now as it came out this morning that Marshall is being questioned after allegedly punching a woman in a New York night club at 4 am, Monday morning.

Something fishy going on in South Beach

Brandon Marshall is gone.

11 million dollars has been freed up in cap space.

A team source told the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero in response to the Marshall trade to "be patient, you'll see."

Free agency started 45 minutes ago.

Some of the speculation?

A) Peyton Manning has told Miami he doesn't like Brandon Marshall, so they traded him to please Manning.

B) Head Coach Joe Philbin doesn't want Matt Flynn to have to deal with a guy like Brandon Marshall.

C) The Dolphins just had enough with him.

I think regardless of the actual answer, it's a win-win-win for Miami.  Keep checking back hourly as stories continue to develop.

(UPDATE: The Marshall trade was independent of Manning chase, according to the Miami Herald.)

Miami Dolphins trade star receiver Brandon Marshall to the..

(UPDATE:  The trade is official, and done)

Chicago Bears.

According to FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer, the Miami Dolphins have indeed traded pro bowl wide receiver to the Chicago Bears for two third round picks.

Wow.

Again, this has JUST been reported, so nothing if official just yet, but as of right now Brandon Marshall is done in Miami and will team back up with QB Jay Cutler in Chicago.

Keep checking back as news continues to unfold.

Dolphins can't afford to remain in Manning holding pattern

Time is ticking.

Time is running out.

In less than four hours, the new league year will begin.  That means that at exactly 4:00 free agency will open up, and the mayhem that will follow will be like nothing we've ever seen before.

And this is gut wrenching for the Miami Dolphins.

Peyton Manning is their number one priority, right?

WRONG!

A quarterback is their number one priority people!  Yes, Manning is their top choice, but they don't have the luxury of waiting 3-4 days for an answer.  They can't sit at home and wait for a phone call from Manning's representatives telling them yay or nay.

Because in 3-4 days, heck, maybe in 3-4 hours, Matt Flynn will be scooped up by the likes of the Cleveland Browns or Seattle Seahawks.

And then what happens if Manning says no?

"Uh, excuse me, Matt Moore, we're sorry for publicly acknowledging that you're not good enough for us, but would you mind starting for us next season, even though you're clearly our last resort?"

Or how about this one:

"And with the eighth pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select QB Ryan Tannehill of Texas A&M.."

Gulp.

Miami cannot afford to wait around for Peyton Manning, but they also don't want to insult the future hall-of-famer by jumping ship and going after Flynn while he's still deciding.

Oh, the irony.  Football is such a physical, hard hitting game on the field.

But off the field?

It's oh so delicate.

The Dolphins are in a holding pattern right now, waiting on Peyton Manning to give them a yes or no, a thumbs up or thumbs down.

But they're quickly running out of fuel.

Dolphins meet with Manning in Indy

Joe Philbin, along with GM Jeff Ireland and four other club officials reportedly met with Peyton Manning in Indianapolis for six hours tonight to discuss the intentions of the future hall of fame QB.

This is coming off the heels of a weekend in which Manning met with both the Cardinals and Broncos, who ESPN reported are the two frontrunners to land the coveted free agent.

Manning is meeting with the Titans sometime tomorrow, and bearing any last minute surprise teams that will conclude all the visits Manning will make.

Keep checking back as the ManningWatch continues to unfold.

Report: Manning, Colts set to part ways

ESPN's Chris Mortenson has learned that Peyton Manning will be released by the Indianapolis Colts sometime tomorrow, ending his 14 year stay in Indianapolis.

Again, nothing is official yet, but if this proves to be true then one can only assume Dolphins' owner Stephen Ross will be on the phone first thing next week, when the free agency period begins, with Manning and company.

Keep checking back as the Peyton Manning to Miami train may have just taken off.
